About Protea Hill Farm
Protea Hill Farm is situated on a hill, 400m above sea level, surrounded by the beautiful Winelands of Stellenbosch. The farm produces fresh fruit for the production of a variety of natural hand-crafted Balsamic Vinegars.
Fruit-bearing plants such as the raspberry bush and the granadilla vine are propagated and grown on the farm. No insecticides or pesticides are used on the plants or fruit. All fruit are sun-ripened and harvested in a ripe condition, giving the fruit a sweet taste. For water conservation purposes, the fruit-bearing plants are irrigated by a drip system.
The raspberry bushes grow on the sloping side of the hill in the open, not in tunnels or under shade cloth. The natural vegetation and wild flowers of the Western Cape live in perfect harmony with the raspberry plantations. For example, the Gladiolus carneus (also known as the 'Painted Lady') grows well amongst the raspberry shrubs.
